I guess this post could be titled “Hey Dawn, go to the gym, part deux.” I made it home after a good but busy day at work after fighting hectic traffic in the pouring rain. All I wanted was to crawl under a blanket and spend some quality time with my dvr.
But, Larry and I had a date with the gym. I can’t tell you how much having him going with me helps. That accountability partner makes a huge difference — someone to urge me forward when I’d rather obey the law that says I should remain at rest.
So, we went out the door with a promise to do the bare minimum — just show up and get started. On Tuesday, I thought it might be the day I did 20 minutes on the elliptical; turns out 10 was all I could muster before heading to the stationary bike. Today, at 9 minutes in on the elliptical I decided I would finish the mile. Then, 20 minutes was in reach and by then two miles seemed achievable. My accountability buddy was ready to go by the time I announced I was going for the 3.1 miles — the elusive 5k mark. It had been a long time since I’d done that on the elliptical — or at all, really. And I made it.
I won’t share my time. Kingdoms have been built faster. But, you know what? I feel a whole lot better from having made the full effort, pushed myself just a wee bit farther than I thought I could make it.
Tomorrow, I may not be able to climb the steps to my office, but I will sleep well tonight.
