Have you ever had a day where there seemed to be a theme running through it? For me today, the theme has been about growth and influence.
I started my day teaching my 5th grade Sunday School class about 12-year-old Jesus being left behind in Jerusalem. We talked about his parents’ search for him and the fact they found him in the temple, listening and asking questions. The story concluded with the fact that Jesus returned home with his parents, was obedient to them, and that he grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.
That lesson was a pretty easy one to teach to the 5th graders, kids even younger than Jesus was who still have a lot of growing ahead of them. But it made me wonder…am I growing in wisdom? How about in favor with God and man?
This afternoon I was privileged to sing in the choir at a memorial service for a fellow choir member. I heard his goddaughter, who had traveled from her home in her native Japan, stand and tell the story of how this man and his wife had blessed her life, had introduced her to Christ, and had been her spiritual mentors over the course of the past 22 years. That’s quite an influence that this couple had. That shows a whole lot of growth in favor with God and man, a whole lot of investment in eternal resources.
At our Bible study tonight, many of us asked the question: would there be someone who could stand at our funerals and say what a difference we had made in their life by introducing them to Jesus and serving as their spiritual mentors?
I believe I’ve had some influence, but I pray that God would use me even more, strengthening my faith in and love for Him and allowing His light to shine through me, drawing others to Him.
