Our backyard is next to the playground at Cherokee Elementary. I spent much of the day tucked into my writing desk working on revisions to the draft of my novel. I heard, off and on throughout the day, the cheers, music, and happy voices that provided the soundtrack of the school’s Field Day.
Wafting in with the sound came memories of hot days in the May sunshine at Westside Elementary and Purks Middle School. Never a great athlete, I had mixed emotions about Field Day. But there were some great memories of three-leg races, tugs-of-war, and any number of other games.
I can almost feel the rope burn now, but those were some good times. Fresh air, friendly competition.
I hope the kids enjoyed their day today.
