Take Me Out to the Ballgame #366Days Day 201

Larry and I are going to go see the Rome Braves play baseball tonight. I’m super excited; this will be our first game of the season. I guess that means the spring has been too busy!

My mind’s been wandering around the baseball diamond a bit today, thinking about baseball through the years. Growing up in Georgia, I guess it’s not a huge surprise that I’ve been a Braves fan for a long time. For one of my birthdays, 10, 11, 12, maybe, we went to a game at Fulton County Stadium. I think it was six to nothing before the Braves ever came to bat. It was a GREAT ballgame though. Dale Murphy hit three or four home runs, and the Braves nearly came back to win.

Then I thought about how my Uncle Gus — quite a pitcher in his day — taught me how to score the baseball game. For years, I found myself tracking each pitch.

We spent quite a few evenings on the couch with Larry’s Grandmother, rooting for Chipper Jones and Javy Lopez, and I’ll never forget the rush of watching Sid Bream hobble his way around the bases after hitting that grand slam. Or that year we went from worst to first.

Yep, there’s nothing quite like the crack of the bat and the belting of Take Me Out to the Ballgame as a way to spend a summer evening. I hope you enjoy your evening and that we don’t roast alive outside in this heat.
